Lifelong Changes

It seems that people start a weight loss plan with a goal in mind and they try to change everything at once.  They get frustrated and it becomes too much change and then they quit.  Here are some tips to ease into a lifelong change.

Set goals and make them realistic, don’t try and change too many things at once.  You can get overwhelmed and want to quit.  Make your eating plan something that you can handle and enjoy long-term.  This is not a “diet” a diet in my opinion is something you go on and off of.  You want to create an eating plan that will stick with you through your weight loss journey and beyond.  Your eating plan will get “tweaked” as you lose weight and make changes for the better.

Make sure you are prepared every day, plan, cook and pack your meals.  Make sure you don’t find yourself without food or you may find yourself scrambling to find healthy options.  I tend to over pack my food bag; just in case I am a little hungrier on a particular day or maybe I need to work late; I want to make sure I have something healthy around, such as fresh fruit, a bag of almonds or maybe protein bars and shakes.  You don’t want to eat whatever is available at the time such as fast food or the office treats that are always around!  Preparing your meals and planning takes work, but it’s worth the effort.

Consistency is the key, invest in the time to make a plan and stick to it, but remember to be flexible.  It’s not all or nothing and when I learned that everything fell into place.  “Things” happen and life goes on whether you’re trying to lose weight or not, sometimes the best plans don’t work out, we have to adapt.  No one is perfect all the time.  If you skip a meal or have an off day get back on track the very next meal!  Don’t wait till the next day and think that you since you had a burger and fries for lunch that the rest of the day is a free for all. The next meal, get back on track!

It takes time to develop healthy eating habits, the longer you eat healthy the more you’ll like it and it will become a normal part of your life!

Thanksgiving Substitutes

Here are some easy ways to cut calories, fat and sugar from some of your favorite side dishes on Thanksgiving.

One of everyone’s favorites is Pumpkin Pie, try using 100% pure pumpkin or fresh pumpkin if you’d like it has less sugar than the canned pumpkin pie mix, also try substituting egg whites for whole eggs. 2 egg whites equal 1 whole egg and use low fat or fat free milk.  Pumpkin bread is another dessert that is made a lot this time of year and you can try substituting applesauce for oil or butter.

For Sweet potato casseroles, try reducing the amount of butter or use a low calorie fat free margarine instead, and use fewer marshmallows.  I don’t think you’re going to find a sugar free marshmallow.  Just out of curiosity I looked up the nutrition facts on these tiny little air-puffed creations.  For a 2/3 cup (30 g) serving there are 100 calories, 0 fat, 25 mg of sodium, 25 g of carbs, 18 grams of sugar and 0 protein. Most people don’t eat French fries on Thanksgiving, but for some other time, sweet potato fries are pretty good in place of the real deal.

Last but not least is Green Bean Casserole, try using fat free Cream of Mushroom Soup, fresh or frozen green beans and fresh mushrooms and fat free milk.  I haven’t found a substitute for the French Fried Onions though.  Again, I looked up the nutrition facts on this as well, for a 2 Tbsp serving size, and that is not a typo either a 2 tbsp serving size has 45 calories, 3.5 g of fat, 60 mg of sodium, 3 grams of carbs and 0 protein.   If anyone can think of a substitute for these, please let us know!  I hope you try some of these and I wish everyone a great Thanksgiving!! Enjoy!!

Questions

This past week was odd, because I had 3 different people ask me the same question.  So, it made me realize that I need to be more specific in how I prepare my food.  My food is really not bland, I cook/bake pretty well, even though I don’t like to cook for myself.

Let’s talk about pumpkin first, I really like pumpkin and I actually eat it everyday.  I’m super busy and so, I do eat my pumpkin from a can.  I make sure it is 100 % pure pumpkin, it does not have to be the named brand pumpkin, I’ve tried several kinds and they all taste the same to me.  But, plain pumpkin straight out of the can with no doctoring up, is not good. I like to take cinnamon, Splenda, and a little bit of natural almonds and mix it all together.  It’s really good, so try preparing it that way.  You can use whatever sweeter you like.  I’ve tried to kick Splenda completely, but honestly I do use it in a couple of things I eat and also coffee.

Next, cottage cheese I know a lot of people don’t like it.  This is another thing that I eat almost everyday.  I like to take the large curd 2% milk-fat (you can use non-fat if you’d like) and again, I add cinnamon, Splenda and blueberries or pineapple, but I like the blueberries the best mix it all together and it tastes like a treat.  I know is probably sounds yucky, but it’s so good!!

Oatmeal, I take plan oatmeal and I add cinnamon, coconut oil (LOVE coconut oil) and again Splenda and usually blueberries, mixed fruit or cherries (the frozen kind) the coconut oil is really good in the oatmeal, give is a really good flavor.

I hope this helps out and don’t eat your food bland. Season your food and  try different things to see what you like!

Have a great weekend!  ~~

Weekend Eating

Weekend eating is a big concern for a lot of people trying to lose weight.  It’s important to really try to eat as clean as you can on weekends also.  Those two days can can really wreak havoc on your diet if you’re not careful.

Remember to plan ahead, if you’re going out to eat, be conscious about choosing  healthier options.  If you know in advance where you are going, look up the nutritional values on the internet.  Look at the menu on-line and know before you go what you’re going to order.

Use a food diary, I write everything I eat in a food journal, even on the weekends!  If you don’t want to write in a food journal,  a lot of smart phones have free apps where  you can input and keep track of your food choices and you’ll have it with you all the time!

Don’t skip breakfast!  Think about it,  you are essentially fasting all night long while you sleep.  Fire up your metabolism and eat breakfast!  It really is the most important meal of the day!  It’s the “break from the fast” !!

If you have a problem with a specific food, don’t bring into the house.  I know several people who have told me peanut butter is something that they just will eat spoonfuls of and they can’t control themselves.  If you have a specific food like this don’t buy it and tempt yourself.   If it’s not in your pantry you can’t eat it!

Don’t try to be “perfect” it’s okay to have treats in moderation, it’s unrealistic to think you’re never going to have a piece of pizza again. Any diet that leaves you feeling deprived will ultimately fail.  So, enjoy what you eat and have a treat every now and then.    Have a great weekend!!

Working Out ~ My favorite thing to do!!

We took picture of me at the gym the other night…I had no idea that my back looked like that!  It’s good to take pictures of yourself, you can see the improvement in your body at different stages. I wish I would have taken more of myself as I was losing weight.  I now tell people to take pictures of themselves, because you’ll want them after you reach your weight loss goal! Also, keep notes about your inches lost, it’s good to be able to look back and see how far you’ve come!

I had no idea my back looked like this! ;)

This was a hard work out, but it was fun!!

I love working out, it’s one of my favorite things to do!
